MEGN 261 Design Project

Drone Package Delivery Mechanism

Problem

Design a mechanical release and delivery mechanism for a drone-based package delivery system. The mechanism needed to reliably hold a payload in flight and release it at a target location without requiring active user control of the release event.

Approach

Two-person team design project focused on mechanical simplicity and reliable actuation. The design process moved from functional requirements through concept generation to a final design with supporting documentation.

  • Requirements definition: Established payload hold strength, release reliability, and form factor constraints based on the target drone platform.
  • Concept development: Evaluated multiple release mechanism concepts (gravity, servo, magnetic) before selecting the final approach based on reliability and weight budget.
  • CAD and documentation: Full SolidWorks model and assembly drawings produced for the selected design. Final design presented via poster format.
