MEGN 201 Fabrication Project

Derby Car Design and Fabrication

Problem

Design and fabricate a derby car from raw stock using machining processes covered in MEGN 201. The deliverable was a finished, rolling car with a complete technical drawing packet produced to GD&T standards.

Approach

Started with a Cybertruck aesthetic aesthetic and worked backward into feasible geometry for shop fabrication. The design prioritized clean lines achievable with available equipment while meeting the dimensional and tolerance requirements of the course.

  • CAD: Full 3D model and assembly in SolidWorks with associated technical drawing packet including GD&T callouts, tolerances, and surface finish specifications.
  • Fabrication processes: Milling, lathe turning, CNC machining, and laser cutting used across different features. Part sequencing planned to minimize setups and avoid tolerance stack-up issues.
  • Final assembly: All components fit-checked and assembled to produce a rolling derby car matching the design intent.
